Vocabulary
1. While planning the class scan through the material you intend to cover and highlight words that you are sure your students won’t know. Make sure you are ready to clarify the meaning.
2. Drill pronunciation first as a group then individually.
3. Decide if the item is high or low frequency and adjust clarification time to suit.
4. Always use as a variety of means to clarify the meaning of a word: visual aids, scale-drawings, graphs, sketches, opposites, synonyms, point to the actual object, act it out, tell an anecdote, etc
5. Or, have the students guess the meaning from the context:
6. Give at least 3 examples in context while exploiting common collocations.
7. Check further understanding with ‘yes/ no’ or ‘or’ questions: Can you eat it? Is it red or green? Activity: 20 Questions
8. Make an effort to use the new vocabulary during the class and to also encourage its use from students.
9. Always keep track of new high-frequency vocabulary that comes up during class.
10. Review all the new vocabulary at the end of the class and at the beginning of the next classes.
11. Any extra (new) vocabulary may be written on the board to give students the opportunity to record it in their notebook / journal.
